Businesses, communities, civilisations, and societies all understand the importance to be inclusive. Businesses benefit from diversity because they have access to a wider range of talent and manpower than they would otherwise. It is no surprise that CEOs and the wealthiest businesses are those who practice multiculturalism and tolerance. Employees will benefit from understanding and having a greater appreciation of multicultural values. This will result in higher productivity, better morale, and a better understanding of other cultures. We aim to eliminate stereotypes about other cultures that persist through generations. Additionally, we will show you how to deal in various situations of discrimination at work so you can create a positive working environment for everyone you meet.

Both diversity and discrimination have different dimensions and degrees of application. They affect many people and leave no one unaffected in civilized societies. It can impact your ability to perform in different cultures and within other companies. We want to make more work environments, and this course is a part of that goal. There are many other courses that you can choose from. Contact us if you have any questions about how to incorporate other training sessions into your personal or company program. We are here to give you the tools to increase productivity and create a better world.

This session is available Australia-wide in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.

Diversity and Discrimination in the Workplace Training Outline

Understand the Historical Impetus Behind Diversity

Diversity and multiculturalism are two terms whose meanings have evolved throughout the past 3,000 years, with each period having various degrees of implementation. A cursory view of history will reveal that the most multicultural of civilizations tend to survive the longest. One can quickly reflect upon this and realize that the same trend applies to businesses; no business ever survives under the weight of cultural and religious discrimination. Being the lifeblood of businesses, employees also have a personal role in ensuring the survival of a business by understanding the importance of various cultures in an ever-changing, ever-shrinking world. Our trainer will therefore guide you through the basics of diversity, its historical impact and various other terms associated with diversity itself.

The Problems of Having Stereotypes

Stereotypes are typically the mind’s attempt to generalise and categorise people and objects into certain classes. Indeed, generalisations through inductive reasoning are extremely helpful as they can help us make reasonable predictions on events before they end up happening, however, improper or misinformed use of it can damage how we perceive cultures and how we act towards them. Worse still, letting these stereotypes persist in one’s mind can damage your relationship with other people, your career and even your company.

Appreciate Political Correctness

In any society, simply having good intentions isn’t enough. One might claim to be helping someone else, to be all-inclusive and be multicultural, but one has to also apply it in the way they say or do things. In other words, we must understand the right terms to use in order to communicate with other cultures, because our goal is to not only believe that all people are equal, but to show that belief. To do this, our training course will navigate participants between various politically correct and incorrect words, when to use them and how to stop ourselves from using them. By the end of this training, participants will be able to address various other cultures with careful use of words.

Identify Instances of Discrimination and How to Deal with Them

Discrimination can happen in multiple ways and across multiple scenarios. Whether it be through an offensive gesture or an inappropriate term used deliberately or otherwise, it is important to identify important scenarios so we are able to deal with them quickly and decisively. For the most part, because of the complexities that involve culture, discrimination is never dealt with through simple reprimands. In other words, the greatest way to deal with discrimination in the workplace is always through education. This training course will devote time to discussing such specific scenarios and the best way of navigating through both sides and addressing rude behavior properly.

Know the four cornerstones of diversity

To encapsulate everything regarding this training course, our trainer will explain to participants the four cornerstones of diversity in turn: knowledge, acceptance, understanding and behavior. Each of these cornerstones truly form a diverse mind, as having all four of them will allow any sales professional to effectively communicate across cultures and address any possible conflict within co-workers. More than that, these values also allude to personal development and greater social skills in general. In other words, by discussing diversity, we’ll discuss how to better ourselves as a whole and become better members of society.

Know Diversity as a Management Style

Just as all political theories hinge upon a central value, so too do management styles depend upon the key value of any successful business: diversity. In other words, just as we must learn how to address other cultures, businesses must also learn how to embody diversity on a top-down level as it can promote greater morale, overall happiness and increased chances for multicultural employee retention.
