Jazzgroove presents ......
Converge Festival @ JG – Triple Bill: Alex Jasprizza, Amanda Suwondo, Sam Gill + guests

Converge Festival meets Jazzgroove! Converge is a run of three nights where Sydney’s next batch of young improvisers rub shoulders on stage with some of Australia’s most respected musicians! Made possible by Sydney University’s larger Verge Festival, Converge gives students groups from the Sydney Conservatorium jazz program the chance to collaborate and perform with a jazz artist of their choice.

This year’s program is particularly diverse with ensemble projects ranging from chamber jazz to afro-cuban to free to modern jazz originals and guest artists from both Sydney and Melbourne including Chris Hale, James Mclean as well as Sydney’s own Toby Hall. The night will feature three sets including:

8:00pm Alex Jasprizza Band ft. Toby Hall

This ensemble intend to present a set of original compositions by members of the band that incorporate elements of textural based composition, non-rigid and/or open forms and free improvisation drawing from the jazz tradition as well elements of contemporary, avant-garde and art music within the context of a chordless ensemble setting. The selection of Toby Hall as our featured guest artist is because of an interest and love for his extensive work, most notably that with Alister Spence and Lloyd Swanton in the Alister Spence Trio. We believe Hall’s rhythmic and textural aesthetics would be a strong compliment to our ensemble and would find it a very musically rewarding and informative process to work with him.

Alex Jasprizza – tenor sax
Jack Stoneham – alto sax
Max Alduca – bass
Guest artist: Toby Hall – drums

9:00pm Amanda Suwondo Band ft. Chris Hale (Melb)

This ensemble will be performing a variety of Latin based music and styles using songs by some of the world’s finest latin jazz players such as Michel Camilo, Chucho Vladez and Tito Puente as vehicles to delve into the world of afro-cuban music. They have asked heavy-weight Melbourne based bass player Chris Hale, who is a considered a strong figure of afro-cuban and flamenco music in Australia, to lead them on this journey.

Amanda Suwondo – piano
Kyle Eardley – trumpet
Kei Araoka – tenor sax
Ragan Kang – trombone
James Harris – drums
Guest Artist: Chris Hale (Melbourne) – bass

10:00pm Sam Gill Band

This ensemble will be performing a set of original material written by members of the group specifically for this performance. Drawing on the rhythmic language developed by numerous East Coast Australian bands including Marc Hannaford Trio, Joe O’Connor Trio & Scott Tinkler’s bands, and orchestrated for a bass-less improvising ensemble inspired by Tim Berne’s Snakeoil & Ingrid Laubrock’s Sleepthief, the music will feature an alluring blend of through-composition and free improvisation. James McLean’s experience with the aforementioned Australian ensembles will give us an insight into the musical approaches and aesthetic decisions that have informed their approach to improvising.

Sam Gill – alto saxophone
Phillippa Murphy Haste – Bb & bass clarinet
Noam Yaffe – viola
Novak Manojlovic – piano
Guest Artist: James McLean (Melbourne) – drums
