Australian born to a Russian immigrant family, Sophia (Sophia Markovtzev) sings with a richness and quality of voice that together with a depth & intensity will leave you feeling raw.

Sophia is familiar to audiences in Australia and Russia as a spirited performer of Russian roots music. The heart wrenching lyrics pose no language barrier as the audience is immediately transformed through her powerful voice and ancestral Russian tongue.

Ready to release her independently produced debut EP ‘Songlines’ Sophia will take the stage at Camelot Lounge on Sunday 6th December with 5-piece band the émigrés, a line-up of highly skilled and brilliant musicians including: Brett Hirst (double bass), Jess Ciampa (percussion), Leonid Beshlei (bayan) & Michael Teterin (Fender Rhodes). Together they will carry you to another realm as the weaving of haunting melodies between SOPHIA & the émigrés deeply permeate your heart.

Enveloped and backed by these talented musicians, ‘Songlines’ marks her unique approach to and expression of traditional Russian folk music. The repertoire is captivating in its arrangements and the delivery of songs transcends the norm of the expected folk style. The roots vocal timbre is fused by music of different genres and musical artistry into something mystical & magical.

In essence, it is Russian roots - as a whole you could call it an émigré of its own accord. For an artist who was not born in Russia, storytelling and producing such music is pure and un-chartered territory.
