Michael Griffin Quintet
After a successful farewell gig in Tasmania, where he was featured prominently in the media, including an ABC radio interview, saxophonist Michael Griffin is playing his last Sydney gig in before leaving for the USA.
Griffin is headed overseas to further his career in jazz and this will be the last chance for Sydneysiders to catch him live.
The Michael Griffin Quintet will play two sets followed by a jam session.
Since becoming a Semi finalist at the 2013 Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition in Washington D.C, Griffin's career has soared. He has had a very successful year establishing his name nationally and internationally. He released his debut album Unexpected Greeting (ABC) which was featured on ABC Jazz (ABC Feature), receiving 4 stars in the Australian "Griffins’s group is a surprise package of talent and cohesion." (John McBeath - The Australian)
He memorably put together one of the year's most exciting gigs - Michael Griffin & Dale Barlow: Tribute to Cannonball/Coltrane REVIEW
He also made his quintet debut at Manly Jazz Festival, toured Tasmania and was featured with a full article in Downbeat Magazine in the September issue (page 3) (Youngest Australian to be featured in Downbeat)
"What he has achieved insures an extremely bright future." Jimmy Heath (USA) "He Flaunts an assertive tone, with an advanced harmonic sensibility and technical fluency that confirm his reverence to Bird and Cannonball Adderley"- Bob Doerschuk (Downbeat Magazine)
"I was floored by this pale young man utterly flying on that most nimble of the jazz horns – the alto." - John Hardaker (Australian Jazz)
