MIKE NOCK TRIO - THREE OUT 'REDUX': The classic MOVE album revisited

There must be mixed feelings when a jazz artist spots a copy of one of his rare early recordings for sale at a truly astronomical price. That was certainly case when pianist Mike Nock was in Japan some years ago and found a copy of his 1960 album MOVE for sale for $US3000. Even though the recording has now been released on both vinyl and CD, original vinyl copies are still highly sort after by serious collectors willing to part with the big bucks.

Now in 2016, Mike has decided to present a very special night, revisiting the tunes from that legendary album MOVE and reinventing them with a very modern twist. Joining him will be bassist Brett Hirst and drummer James Waples for what will surely be a very special, and history making night, at Foundry 616.

The history:

In 1960, pianist Mike Nock and drummer Chris Karan, both 20 years old at the time, formed a trio with 30 year old Dutch bassist Freddie Logan, that changed the face of Australian modern jazz. Opening at the El Rocco in Sydney's Kings Cross, the trio quickly began drawing capacity crowds and within 6 weeks recorded their first album, "MOVE" for Columbia Australia. This became a best seller and established them as Australia's leading jazz group. They represented Australia on the 1960 JAZZ FESTIVAL tour, sharing the bill with big names Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughn, Coleman Hawkins, Teddy Wilson, etc., then toured New Zealand and recorded their follow-up album "SITTIN' IN."

Not long after this they left Australia for London where Chris joined Dudley Moore's trio, Freddie joined Tubby Hayes quartet and Mike left for the USA on a scholarship to Boston's Berklee School of Music. In 1985, a quartet of a century after the initial session pianist/ critic Dick Hughes wrote in the Sydney Telegraph, "MOVE remains one of the greatest jazz recordings ever made in Australia."

Now both albums ( MOVE & SITTIN' IN) have been remastered and re-released on both vinyl and CD by German label BE! Jazz.

The MIKE NOCK trio, with bassist Brett Hirst and drummer James Waples, is widely regarded as one of the top modern jazz groups in Australia. The trio's unique sound includes jazz standards plus Mike’s original compositions, reflecting his wide experience in the top echelon of international jazz performance.

Having celebrated his 75th birthday at the club last year, and with several festival appearances throughout Australasia, this is the trio’s first Sydney club performance this year, and will be a great chance to experience their musical magic in an intimate setting.
