How to get on boards

Good managers have what it takes to become good directors. But, unless you found your own company, for many of us the route to the boardroom is far from clear. Even when we have specific governance and board training the obstacles can seem unsurmountable and, often, the pressures and challenges of our current jobs distract us from the pursuit of a chance to be involved at the highest level of corporate activity.

How, as a prospective director, can you be sure that you really have what it takes to be a board member?

When it is clear that you have the right attributes, how do you go about gaining a board seat?

Having served on one board, how do you leverage that to gain another?

This valuable session will provide ideas to help you to answer the above questions. It will focus your actions on the areas where improvement will lead to the biggest increase in your attractiveness to boards.

This unique event provides the opportunity to hear practical advice from an experienced board member who has worked in the paid and unpaid and in commercial, not for profit and government sectors.

It may be the key in helping you find the board positions you are looking for.

Additional documentation will be provided to participants via email after the event.

Participants will have an opportunity to obtain a copy of Julie Garland McLellan’s latest book Dilemmas, Dilemmas: Practical Case Studies for Company Directors. The book is also available through the AIM bookshop and Amazon.com.

Julie Garland McLellan is a professional non-executive director and is the author of "All Above Board: Great Governance for the Government Sector" and “Dilemmas, Dilemmas: Practical Case Studies for Company Directors”. She is the editor of “The Director’s Dilemma” newsletter which is read in 24 countries around the world.

A long time advocate for merit based board selection processes, Julie has worked in board and director education presenting at education events and conferences for numerous professional bodies. Julie also mentors aspiring and practising board members to improve their effectiveness.

Julie has experience on a range of boards in the government, not-for-profit and commercial sectors. She has served on the boards of Melbourne Water Corporation, Victorian Energy Networks Corporation (VENCorp), City West Water, Victorian Minerals and Energy Council, Hats Holdings, Bounty Mining, Kyoto Energy Group, Kimbriki Environmental Enterprises and Hassall & Associates.

She is also a councillor of the NSW Division of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
