TEN DOLLAR TUESDAYS @ FOUNDRY616

Andrew Robson Trio

Andrew Robson – alto saxophone

Steve Elphick – double bass

Hamish Stuart - drums

Since making their debut at the Strawberry Hills Hotel in 1993, Andrew’s trio has cemented itself as one of the great improvising trios on the Australian scene. Inspired in part by the freewheeling melodicism of Bernie McGann’s great trio with Lloyd Swanton and John Pochée, Robson’s approach to the demanding trio setting has always centered around his own compositions, which provide the springboards for the group’s musical journeys.

Andrew’s trio has released a string of highly praised recordings, the most recent of which ‘Songbook’ was released in 2013 to further critical acclaim. More recently Robson, Elphick and Stuart have been pursuing variety of other projects and this performance sees the Andrew’s Trio’s make their debut appearance at Foundry 616.

On his inspiration in putting his trio together, Robson recalls:

“I was fortunate to arrive in Sydney during the early 1990s which was a particularly creative time; Bernie was working with his trio, Clarion Fracture Zone was playing, Miroslav Bukovsky’s Wanderlust, The catholics and the Necks had just started, Ten Part Invention and The Engine Room were working locally and touring, Mike Nock always had incredible groups; Mark Simmonds and the Freeboppers were playing again and Jackie Orszaczky was also very active. It was impossible not to be inspired by all of these great players and I hope that my trio continues in the same spirit as these great musicians.”

This is a rare opportunity to hear Andrew’s original trio in a venue that also continues the long tradition of intimate Sydney jazz venues whose primary focus is the music. From the El Rocco to Soup Plus; the Strawberry Hills Hotel of the early 1990s to the Side On Café, Foundry 616 offers the perfect setting to experience this iconic Australia trio.

“Robson brought to the music passion and a prodigious technique tempered by lyricism and good taste.” Eric Myers, The Australian, 14 September 2015

“Equally at home in traditional and avant-garde jazz contexts, bandleader and composer Andrew Robson is recognised as one of Australia’s leading saxophonists.”

Limelight Magazine, 2013
