In her role as Australian Human Rights Commission President, Emeritus Professor Gillian Triggs has championed human rights for all Australians. Over the past four years as President of the Commission, she has drawn attention to critical issues of human rights, freedoms and liberties in Australia. In her reports to Parliament and wider advocacy, President Triggs has raised concerns with Australia's immigration policies, particularly practices of detention of children; highlighted the responsibilities of the private sector in protecting human rights; and emphasized an urgent need to build greater protections of human rights into Australian law.

In the Derek Fielding Memorial address, Professor Triggs will discuss the current state of human rights protections in Australia. She will consider how Australia's legal and policy systems do not fully uphold our international human rights obligations, and discuss the ways forward to achieve greater protection of rights and liberties
