SURFACE 1°22 presents...FRIDAY 16 SEPTEMBER | 2016

The Melbourne Surface Art Symposium is a forum for artists and designers looking to expand their craft, eager to learn how to develop a career in surface art, pattern design and art licensing. This year, the symposium looks specifically at the relationship between hand and computer, and how digital technologies impact originality, identity and help bring ideas into the global marketplace. Three industry speakers and a panel of special guests will share their knowledge on a range of topics from varied experiences in the world of designing and selling art. The afternoon is rounded off with Q&A for our group of presenters, followed by networking and refreshments.

ABOUT US

Emily Wills

Champion of the sharpie, Emily designs bold and geometric digital prints in collaboration with fashion brands around the globe. In her various manifestations she has worked as a fashion designer, illustrator, printed textile designer + design educator. As the creative director of SURFACE 1°22, Emily developed a series of Textile Design workshops to simplify the design process and teach surface pattern design to a global audience.

Nerida Hansen

Nerida is the director of Nerida Hansen Print & Textiles, a global print and pattern-sourcing hub. Drawing upon her commercial experience as a buyer of licensed brands for one of Australia’s largest retailers, and her personal passion for independent design, Nerida facilitates the sale and licensing on pattern and surface art designs between artists, and buyers or manufacturers.

Chole Kerr

Chole is the co-founder and Director at Next State. Having worked in textiles for ten years Chole has a strong focus on textile production and working with clients to bring their design visions to life. Next State is a digital textile print company, working to provide high quality printing, fast turnaround times with excellent customer service for the creative community at large.

Laura Blythman

Designer, illustrator and creative director Laura Blythman is renowned for her vibrant use of colour and paper collage. Her recognisable aesthetic has garnered her a legion of fans and a super happy and colourful portfolio of work with clients ranging from start up businesses to high profile Australian and International brands.

Louise Jones

Louise Jones is a Melbourne-based designer specialising in pattern and illustration. Her original pattern and artwork is characterised by bursts of colour, botanical motifs and clean lines. Louise uses a combination of different mediums in her practice, including watercolour painting, illustration and her own photography. Creating original and custom patterns for fabric and wallpaper, her work is predominately featured in interiors.

CANCELLATION POLICY

The Melbourne Surface Art Symposium requires many moving parts and bodies to run smoothly. Please note that in the extremely unfortunate event we need to cancel this Symposium, we reserve the right do so if (a) the Symposium does not attain a minimum number of ticket holders or (b) a presenter, or special guest falls ill. In the unfortunate circumstance of this Symposium being cancelled, participants will be notified at least 48 hours before the commencement of the Symposium, and credit notes or refunds will be offered.

If you are unable to attend the Symposium, please let us know within four days of the event. Your attendance may affect our ability to host the event, and pay our presenters. We are a small team of local creative and business owners. Please note that we cannot offer refunds for no-shows or partial refunds for late comers.
