The irresistible grooves of Paul Chenard’s MATANZA are back, this time with a Brazilian recording project that was started a year ago in Sydney and finished mixing in Rio de Janeiro. It includes world class musicians from Brasil and Australia. The Cd was mixed by none other than award winning Alex Moreira from Bossa Cucanova.

After lengthy travels in Brazil, Paul and his team have re arranged some of the beautiful melodies from the Choro and Samba song book and applied them to a more contemporary sound. The result is a fresh and colourful sound and features compelling instrumental performances from the band members.

The CD is a blend of Funk, Samba, Jazz and Choro music and is a real cross pollination of styles.

The kick-ass lineup includes Paul Chenard (saxophones), Brendan St Ledger (piano) Tina Harris (bass) Deva Permana (drums),

Jess Ciampa (percussion), Mike Raper (trombone) Marty Farrugia (trumpet)

Guests will be Marcelo DAvila (voc, guitar),

The second set will feature Marcelo DAvila from Sao Paulo Brazil singing a range of up-tempo songs from Carlinhos Brown, Joao Bosco, Seu Gorge, Gilberto Gil and Djavan. It’s the perfect storm for getting everyone off their seats and grooving.

MATANZA is set apart from other Latin jazz line-ups by its sheer energy level, charisma, and most of all, its sense of fun.

“Matanza blew the roof off. They played with an irrepressible energy that didn’t let up all night. The all-star lineup, a who’s who of Sydney’s Latin Jazz fraternity, set a blistering pace as they steamrolled through a sizzling repertoire of some of the hottest Afro Brazilian tunes, punctuated by sophisticated jazzy breaks, chugging Brazilian samba and downright sexy funk.” Diaspora World Beat
