“Hetty has an approach to the songs that feels just right. She sings with an easy confidence that is infectious.” Joseph Lang - Jersey Jazz Magazine (USA)

Melbourne based vocalist Hetty Kate has been performing for ten years, and in that time she has graced stages from New Zealand to New York; released seven albums; sings for the lindy-hop community across Europe, Asia and Australia; joined James Morrison with his touring bands; and more recently has joined the ABC Jazz stable of vocalists.

Always infusing each performance with spontaneity and fun, Hetty is sometimes compared to a young Peggy Lee, Doris Day or modern-day chanteuse Stacey Kent. She is often lauded by musicians and audiences for what she ‘doesn’t do’ as a jazz singer. Originally trained in classical voice, she swings her way through The Great American Songbook with clarity and diction, always honouring the melody and lyric of these timeless tunes and taking the audience with her for a joyful ride. It is this rare quality that led Mal Stanley (ABC Jazztrack) to invite her to record an album of treasures from the catalogues of June Christy, Julie London and Peggy Lee in 2014. Titled ‘Dim All The Lights’ this album has been released in Australia (ABC Jazz), New Zealand (Universal Music) and Japan (Disk Union).

Hetty Kate & James Sherlock

Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, James Sherlock is one of Australia’s most captivating and exciting guitarists. He has toured across Australia and internationally, and personal career highlights include performing with the MSO, guitar virtuoso Martin Taylor, Katie Noonan, Sheila Jordan, Kristin Berardi and a long list of Australia’s finest. James won the prestigious ‘Ike Isaacs International Jazz Guitar Award” and was nominated for the Freedman Fellowship. Much in demand as a band-leader and sideman, James can be heard on Hetty Kate's NZ release ‘Dim All The Lights’ and her recent EP ‘Comes Love’.

For this intimate show at Nexus Arts the always entertaining Hetty and James will play a selection of beautiful songs from her album releases, alongside classics and curios from their favourite composers.

“..a stage presence only matched by the clarity of her voice.” James Morrison AM, Multi-instrumentalist
