Horse&Wood - Mongolian Nights
Renowned Mongolian Throat Singer Bukhu Ganburged returns to Hobart in a unique fusion with renowned Sydney string player John Robinson Thursday 12th January at The Grand Poobah. 8pm.
The collaboration, called “Horse&Wood” blends the ethereal traditional music of Mongolia, with the strings of the Middle east and Asia minor, along with spontaneous improvisations and music crossing many genres.
Bukhu is a Masters Graduate of the Morin Khuur (Horse Fiddle) and an internationally renowned performer of traditional Mongolian music, he also often breaks tradition and ventures into many styles such as blues, jazz, even electronic music.
John Robinson is a musician and teacher from the Blue Mountains. Having graduated with Honours in 2002 with a thesis on Improvisation in the Music of the Mediterranean and Asia Minor, John has been studying the music of that region ever since, playing the Oud, and Turkish Saz, as well as performing in many other genres.
Described by John Shand of the Sydney Morning Herald : “Multiculturalism run amok – At a stroke, the pair shrink about 8000 kilometres of the vast expanse of Asia to nothing, and in the process invent a whole new sonic colour combination that arguably could only have happened in Australia.”
Horse&Wood have performed at the Sydney Opera House, National Folk Festival, MONA, and many music festivals and events around Australia. Bukhu and John were also finalists in the recent Australian Independent Music Awards in the world/folk category.
This is a rare opportunity to hear a unique form of singing live and up close, as well as amazing musicianship and rare fusions with a contemporary edge, so come early and get a good get seat and maybe a drink or a meal. Horse&Wood play at The Grand Poobah Thursday January 12th at 8pm $10 Entry
