We’re hosting a Variety Night to raise funds for our friend Clare Vickery, who was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in January 2016.

MND is a debilitating and terminal condition, which causes the nerve cells (neurones) controlling the muscles that enable us to move, speak, breathe and swallow; to degenerate and die. The average life expectancy from diagnosis is 27 months.

The causes of MND are not yet known and there is no known cure and no effective treatment.

Clare’s amazing husband, Chris, and two beautiful children Lexi (6) and Josh (4), will have to face life without her. They’ve moved from Sydney to Armidale to be closer to family support and Chris is now Clare’s full-time carer.

Clare has been brave enough to volunteer for a clinical trial called The Lighthouse Project. The study aims to determine the safety and tolerability of an anti-retroviral therapy “Triumeq” and provide preliminary data on whether it is able to slow down the progression of MND.

Although Clare’s prognosis will not be changed by this therapy, her willingness to participate in this trial demonstrates extraordinary strength of character in the face of extreme adversity.

Clare’s doing this for us and for future generations!  Let’s help her make the future a brighter one for MND sufferers.

Funds raised from this event will go towards:

• MND NSW for motor neurone disease support, education and research, and
• Clare and her family, including large medical bills and monthly drives from Armidale to Sydney to participate in the clinical trial.
