Pitching for impact in a changing media landscape

The media world has changed faster than most of us have had time to update our contact lists. Newspapers now share with digital outlets, newsletters, podcasts and social first news sites. People are asking 'Are papers even important anymore? What do we do with new digital players?' Where do podcasts fit?'

This workshop is for people who need to get stories up but feel like the landscape has shifted under their feet. Together, we'll walk through what the media environment looks like now and talk about who actually pays attention to the different channels and formats.

From there, we'll get practical. You'll map a real issue from your organisation, decide who you're trying to reach, and choose a handful of channels that make sense for that audience. Then we'll turn that issue into a clear, targeted pitch and work through what to send, who to send it to and how to follow up without being a pest.

The session mixes short inputs with concrete exercises. You'll leave with a simple 'lay of the land' snapshot, a pitch (or two) you can actually use, and a better sense of where to focus your energy next time you have a story to tell.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the key parts of today’s media landscape, including print, online, newsletters, podcasts and social-first news sites
  • Link their advocacy or communications goals to specific audiences, channels and formats
  • Develop clear, targeted pitches with a strong hook, human angle, evidence and a clear ask
  • Tailor pitches for different platforms (for example, newsrooms, niche outlets, podcasts and digital native sites)
  • Use practical approaches to start and maintain constructive media relationships
This interactive workshop will be conducted online via Zoom and is delivered as a 2.5hour session.
Participants will need audio access at a minimum. Slide handouts will be provided after the session.

To support a collaborative and engaging learning experience, this workshop will not be recorded.
