Sounds Good to Me Phonological Awareness WORKSHOP in Scone

What is phonological awareness?

Phonological awareness is a pre-reading skill and is a strong predictor of later success in reading. It is the ability to attend to the sound structure of language. It is an explicit understanding that spoken words consist of smaller parts e.g. syllables and sounds. It is the ability to identify sounds and their sequence in words, and to be able to compare words on this basis.

This workshop is for Early Childhood Educators and Teachers working in preschools, long day care, family day care and schools with 3-5 year olds. It is presented by Anne Williams, Certified Practising Speech Pathologist, HealthWISE New England North West, Narrabri.

The workshop covers the following:

  • ·What is Phonological Awareness?
  • ·Why is it important for school readiness?
  • ·Why should we teach this at our centre?
  • ·What is the evidence?
  • ·Where does it fit in the Early Years Learning Framework?
  • ·Pre and post program screening tools
  • ·Activities to incorporate into your program for 3-5 years
  • ·Each Centre will receive a copy of the program materials and manual

HealthWISE has developed this program to help improve children’s preparation for learning literacy skills. These activities will fit well with your Centre’s school readiness program and is suitable for use with Long Day Care professional development funding.
