In its final concert for 2017, Coro Austral presents music from European and Latin American cultures honouring the memory of those who have departed.

“Every work in this concert tells a story of love”, says Artistic Director Margot McLaughlin. “There’s loss, longing, fear, defiance, reunion, nostalgia, pain, consolation, yearning, wishing, anticipation — and rejoicing!”

The centrepiece is Portuguese composer Manuel Cardoso’s sublime Missa Pro Defunctis (Mass for the Dead), an intensely expressive work from the late Renaissance. Other European pieces include Henry Purcell’s Funeral Anthems for Queen Mary, and Edward Elgar’s They Are At Rest as well as works by Arvo Pärt (Estonia), Juan del Enzina (Spain), and Cearcall a’ chuain, a Scottish/Gaelic song reflecting on the cycles of life.

From Latin America come La Llorona,a traditional Mexican folk-song associated with the Day of the Dead and two pieces from Argentina, the tango Cuando tu no estas (When you are not there) and Alfonsina y el mar, commemorating the loss of a beloved poet who took her own life by walking into the sea.

The concert also honours Cuban musicians Margot learned from during her visit there in 2013, especially Electo Silva, founder of the Festival Internacional de Corosin Santiago de Cuba, who died earlier this year. His arrangements of Ausencia and La Tarde are works Coro Austral will take on its tour to Cuba in November, culminating in performances at the same Festival.

Since Margot formed the choir in 2010, Coro Australhas gained an excellent reputation as a skilled chamber choir specialising in the authentic presentation of Spanish and Latin American choral works as well as music from other traditions worldwide.

Refreshments and wine will be available after the performance.
