Event Details

In the spirit of International Women's Day the Sydney Cello Quartet will be exploring the impact female performers, composers and muses have had on the cello repertoire.

Hear excerpts from Elgar's Cello Concerto which is so inextricably linked with Jaqueline Du Pre's brilliant yet tragically short career.  Du Pre may be the most famous female cellist to capture the hearts and minds of her audience, however, she is far from the first. Hear about the unique performance by Beatrice Harrison and a nightingale of Dvorak's "Songs My Mother Taught Me" that caused an international sensation and learn about the cellist to whom Mendelssohn dedicated one of his final works.  Find out about the women who inspired musical greats such as Bach and Beethoven to create some of their most memorable works and discover music composed by the Scottish cellist Marie Dare .

Meet the musicians after the concert and enjoy some light refreshments in the beautiful surroundings of Christ Church Lavender Bay.
