Our favourite landholders are looking for a helping hand again this May to keep on top of the weeds at the Old Corrimal Colliery in Tarrawanna.

We will be helping with the rainforest restoration work, removing weeds, and helping John and Jill get a handle on things again.

This property is a significant patch in the Illawarra escarpment and John and Jill dedicate 4 days a week to going up and restoring the environment. They are some of the most passionate folk you could meet. From a degraded mine site, to a thriving ecosystem, you won't believe the transformation they have achieved over the last few years, and we are proud to say we have contributed to this work over the years too.

Some of the issues the site faces though:

  • Weed invasion
  • Suspected illegal wildlife trapping
  • Vandalism
  • Dogs off leashes disturbing ground-dwelling native wildlife
  • Illegal track-building by bikers - causing gully erosion and loss of delicate ferns and fungi
  • Deer trampling, crushing and ring-barking native trees, shrubs and grasses

We will spend a few hours working with John and Jill in the bush and finish with a BBQ lunch.

There is also the option to hike up to Brokers Nose after if you are feeling fit.

To RSVP: Please register via StickyTicket
Please wear: Long sleeves, long pants, sturdy shoes, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent
Please bring: Plenty of drinking water, something to have on the BBQ / dish to share / snacks
Please note: This is a 16 + event

You will need to have a reasonable level of fitness to move around the site. There are some steep slippery areas, and the ground, being coal wash and debris can be unstable under foot at times, so please keep this in mind when considering your mobility - we can cater to those who do have limitations though, let us know and we can select safe areas for you to work and contribute. There is always plenty to be done!

The afternoon hike is an optional extra and will not be covered under the Landcare insurance for the project, this will be at your own risk, but there are clear trails leading up to the top and it is regularly hiked by local residents :)
