GILDAS LE PAPE GYPSY JAZZ GUITAR WORKSHOP

French-Norwegian guitarist, GILDAS LE PAPE (Hot Club de Norvège), will be conducting a gypsy jazz guitar workshop immediately prior to his show at Butchers Brew Bar on Thursday, 9th April.

In every great workshop, there’s a moment when something clicks—an idea that reshapes how you hear harmony, feel rhythm & approach the guitar. This gypsy jazz workshop is designed to create exactly those moments.

We’ll explore the foundations of gypsy jazz rhythm & harmony: how chords are constructed, how to craft strong & authentic voicings, & how timing & feel bring the music to life. You’ll learn how to create movement & colour through alternative chord choices, substitutions & tasteful variations that keep your playing fresh & expressive.

On the improvisation side, we’ll break down essential tools for confident soloing.  Using arpeggios as a framework, we’ll work on technique, phrasing & note selection—focusing on clarity, swing feel, groove & musical storytelling. We’ll also cover ornamentation, articulation, dynamics & the art of simplicity, helping you say more with less. Practical problem-solving strategies will help you navigate chord changes with confidence & creativity.

Whether you’re refining your rhythm playing or developing your solo voice, this workshop will deepen your understanding of gypsy jazz language & give you practical concepts you can immediately apply to your playing.
