MELSAMBA 30th ANNIVERSARY PARTY
The very best in Brazilian Dance Music in one great night!
SAMBA ENREDO - PAGODE - AXÉ - SAMBA FUNK - SAMBA REGGAE - FORRÓ
MelSamba is turning 30 this year so we’ve decided to celebrate it in style. We have invited two great bands to share the stage with us: SAMBRAZUKA & MANDACARÚ. This will be the very first time we all play in the same party! Dance the night away to:
MelSamba, the Samba Drums of Rio
MelSamba (G.R.E.S. Unidos de Melbourne) is Australia's first Samba School, founded in 1988 by Brazilian Master Drummer CARLOS FERREIRA, from Vila Isabel in Rio de Janeiro. MelSamba plays the genuine samba from the Rio Carnival Parade, where Carlos regularly performs with Rio's top Samba Schools.
DANY MAIA & SUINGUE BRAZUCA
There is a Brazilian expression that says: ‘A Baiana is not born, a Baiana debuts’, and a better one: ‘What is it this Baiana has got?’. Baiana is a person born in Bahia – Brazilian Northeast State. DANY MAIA although, innate Baiana, yet at home, debuted very early in the music industry and now brings to Australia what she’s got.
Dany Maia started off her career at the age of 15 and performed alongside important artists of her homeland, such as Margareth Menezes and Timbalada. Percussive rhythms like Samba, Samba-reggae, Axe, Pagode, Afro and Forró shook Dany’s leg and made her travel around Brazil, Portugal and Spain as a professional dancer. A few years later, her passion for this same music inspired her to remain on stage, but now as a singer.
Carlos Ferreira's SUINGUE BRAZUCA brings together some of the finest proponents of Brazilian music to perform names such as as
LACHLAN DAVIDSON - Sax & Flute
STEVE SEDERGREEN - Keyboards,
JORGE ALBUQUERQUE - Bass,
JOSHINHO DO CAVACO - Cavaquinho,
DIEGO VILLALTA - Guitar,
MARIO LATTUADA - Guitar,
AMANDINHA FERREIRA - Percussion,
JULIANA NASCIMENTO - Percussion and
CARLOS FERREIRA - Drums & Vocals.
Together with guest DANY MAIA and players from Carlos Melsamba Bateria this unique musical combination is a joyful celebration of Brazil - colourful, energetic, passionate and from the heart.
SAMBRAZUKA
An 100% Brazilian band, Sambrazuka is synonym of party, happiness and lots of fun! Created in Melbourne three years ago, Sambrazuka have been entertaining thousands of Brazilians and non-Brazilians with their samba, world music and western songs with Brazilian rhythms! Come and discover a new world of sounds and a whole heap of fun with Sambrazuka!
MANDACARÚ
Melbourne based MANDACARU play the swirling dancefloor music from the northeast of Brazil known as Forró.
Lead by singer and accordion player- PHILLIPE ALVES and Maracatu Estrela Do Mar founder/Melbourne Festival Cultural Ambassador/Casa de Roboco (Melb forró night) founder – SEU ANTONIO.
The group move through forró hits enriched with the style’s trademark rootsy blend of soaring melodies, hot Brazilian percussion and an infection rhythmic pulse popular with Brazilians and dancers around the world.”
Mandacaru plays raw and rare Forró style, an earthy, organic, melodic sound featuring vocals, accordion and sizzling Brazilian percussion with a unique rhythmic pulse.
Phillipe Alves brings influences from his hometown and over 15 years of expertise sharing Forró from the Northeast of Brazil.
Ramona Yagnik on percussion/vocals, from India, spent a few years in Brazil exploring traditional music such as Coco and Afoxé, and has continued in Australia with Maracatu and Forró.
Antonio Moreira from Recife on percussion/vocals blends and shares his rich musical background representing styles such as Maracatu, Coco, Afoxé and Forró. Tiago Ucella on percussion/vocals has been enthusiastic about Brazilian rhythms and percussion since he started practicing capoeira in his childhood. Over the past few years while in Brazil and Australia he has been sharing his percussion experience in several Samba, Choro and Forró bands.
Mandacaru creates exotic and upbeat grooves that will get you up and dancing.
