Mara! Band and Martenitsa Choir ‘Originals’

– New album teaser

Mara! and Martenitsa will join forces for a feast of original music penned especially for this uniquely Australian World/Jazz/Roots ensemble, featuring jazz legends Sandy Evans and Paul Cutlan on woodwinds and Lloyd Swanton on double bass, world music icons Mara Kiek (voice & percussion) and Llew Kiek (plucked strings) along with the magnificent sound of Martenitsa Choir, featuring Bulgarian soloist Silvia Entcheva.

Those familiar with this award-winning ensemble’s magnificent collaborative albums ‘Sezoni’(ARIA final nominee)and ‘Tra Parole e Silenzio’ will line up to preview the creative fruits of these remarkable musicians in this new collection of original works (working title ‘Za vas, ot nas’), due for release on CD early next year.

Bathe in the exquisite sound of the Martenitsa choir crowned with the angel voice of Silvia Entcheva and paired with the vivid imagination, virtuosity and raw energy of the Mara! band… and luxuriate in a sonic spa of rich and evocative new Australian music.

"A fine and seamless dialogue between cultural time frames...a richly variable sound. A deeply structured set which allows for free playing... (with) stark, pastel sequences and exuberant rhythms."Sezoni Rolling Stone

"… quite remarkable one of the most poignant recordings you are ever likely to hear... simultaneously reaching back into the past and progressing into the future… a rich and thrilling tapestry… without a hint of overkill, the sum of the parts is sublimely transcendental, crucial.Sezoni Drum Media

“Once every year or two a reviewer is lucky enough to receive a disc as good as Tra Parole e Silenzio”. Music Forum

“(Tra Parole e Silenzio) joins together in glorious communion all arms of a cerebral band that championed world music in Australia before that nebulous term was even coined… Mara Kiek's crystalline singing… Sandy Evans’ expressive soprano sax… spine-tingling solo vocals of Silvia Entcheva… stinging alto sax solo from Andrew Robson… breathtaking beauty”.
