Dynamic long-running Perth group Speedball was a jewel in the Perth jazz scene after it’s inception in 2000, until its members were scattered across the globe (two studying in the USA, one based in London, and others relocating to Melbourne and New York). Formed after an inspiring tour of New Orleans and New York City, Carl Mackey (saxophone) and Mat Jodrell (trumpet) sought to form a super band that would conjure a similar energy to which they’d experienced overseas.

After many years Speedball have overcome geographical challenges to find themselves reunited again in their native country. The front line of saxophonist Carl Mackey and trumpeter Mat Jodrell share a rare connectivity, complimented by the virtuosity of pianist Grant Windsor, Daniel Susnjar and bassist Sam Anning. The group will be exploring standard and original material, with a promised emphasis on extremes – extremes of energy, beauty, ferociousness, swing, subtlety, and emotion.

After an extended hiatus, 2017 found Speedball back together and finally releasing their debut album, ‘We Have Moved’ to critical acclaim. To launch the release, the group played to a sell out crowd at The Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Morrison’s Jazz Club and the Sydney Con International Jazz Festival. 'We Have Moved' was a nominee for ‘Best Jazz Album’ in The Age Music Victoria Awards in 2017. This year, the album was nominated for 3 prestigious Bell Awards, taking out ‘Best Australian Jazz Song’ for Mat Jodrell’s ‘Judgement Day.’
