Matt Felvus, Manager TAFE Services – Lithgow, Bathurst, Cowra, Grenfell and Mudgee, West Region - TAFE NSW - Recent changes and its impact on Industry!

Matt is a dedicated career public servant with a passion for education. A career spanning over 14 years, Matt started his journey as a Correctional Officer at Long Bay Correctional Centre in 2007. After several years on the front line working in challenging and often unpredictable environments Matt commenced his Bachelors of Education and started working at Head Office for the Department of Justice focusing on strategy, quality assurance and policy.

In 2016 whilst working for the Department of Justice, Matt worked within a tight knit team developing and introducing the Case Management Reform. This key premier’s priority saw a complete overhaul of the management of offenders whilst in custody. This state wide reform aimed to reduce reoffending across NSW. Matt oversaw the training of new staff and developing quality assurance tools to measure the success of the reform.

Craving a ‘Tree Change’ Matt packed his family and moved to the Central West in June 2017. Working at the Education and Programs Manager for the newly opened Macquarie Correctional Centre at Wellington. Whist working in Wellington, Matt had full autonomy over the innovative structured day for maximum security offenders. Matt oversaw various educational and criminogenic programs. Offenders were given the opportunity to study various vocational options such as Business Operations, Cleaning, Fitness and Literacy and Numeracy. Matt was also instrumental in creating partnerships with local community including a program with the NRL which trained offenders to become referees.

Since April 2018 Matt has been working for TAFE as the Manager of TAFE Services across 5 different locations in the Central West (Lithgow, Bathurst, Cowra, Grenfell and Mudgee). This new position has a strong focus of community engagement and driving new course and training options for the communities within his cluster. Thus far Matt has enjoyed connecting with local community members and listening to what vocational options are needed within his communities. Acting as a conduit between TAFE and the Community, Matt works closely with delivery teams across TAFE to ensure community demand is met.

Although a significant history with the Public Service Matt has experienced the pressures and successes of operating a small business. Prior to undertaking his role with TAFE Matt successfully operated a small business – Blueberry and Co. A charter bus and transport company which specialised in wine tours of the South Coast. What started as a small family business quickly expanded over a number of years. Matt is a clear communicator with vast experience managing multidisciplinary teams. With a strong sense of social justice Matt is passionate about creating opportunities for less fortunate members of the community.
