If you like dance rhythms and enjoy gentle melodies, if you feel like immersing yourself into a colourful mix of various musical genres including traditional Ukrainian folk, contemporary classics, medieval ballads, ethno-fusion, motives influenced by Irish, Latin American and Russian music and even more, If you want to listen to unusual and exotic musical instruments such as bandura, futujara, vargan and dukllar we welcome you to the "Music out the frame" double gig by the Australian-Russian band VGmates and Larissa Kovalchuk.
VGmates is a multicultural musical project from Sydney. Their music style can mostly be described as ethno-fusion or folk rock. The band combines traditional and exotic musical instruments (Irish whistle, duklar, vargan, kaljuka, fujara, guitars, bass, percussions, drums and Russian balalaika) with modern technologies, such as loopers, harmonisers, synthesizers, controlled by guitars or by voice. All of this creates a unique and rich live sound and makes each performance a fascinating and engaging show.
Larissa Kovalchuk’s enchanting soprano voice, combined with the gentle sounds of the bandura, has thrilled audiences around the world including her native Ukraine, Europe and Australia. Larissa studied voice, bandura and conducting at Kyiv Conservatorium of Music, and soon became one of the nation’s leading players. She performed at numerous festivals in Ukraine and across Europe, including Latvia, Estonia, Germany and France. Larissa was a laureate of the 1993 all-Ukrainian Bandura Festival and won international renown when she performed at the 1994 “All the World’s Violins” Festival in France.
Since moving to Australia, Larissa has made recordings with SBS and ABC, and appeared in the Sydney Opera House, Multicultural and Folk Festivals, Musica Viva, Cafe Carnivale and Australia Day Concerts. She has also been invited as a soloist to perform with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra in the "Noel!Noel!" concert series as well as performing at the 2015 Woodford Folk Festival.
