What is phonological awareness?

Phonological awareness is a pre-reading skill and is a strong predictor of later success in reading. It is the ability to

attend to the sound structure of language. It is an explicit understanding that spoken words consist of smaller parts

e.g. syllables and sounds. It is the ability to identify sounds and their sequence in words, and to be able to compare

words on this basis.

The workshop is aimed at Early Childhood Educators and Teachers working in preschools, long day care, family

day care and schools (Early Stage One) with 3-5 year olds. HealthWISE is running this program to help improve

children’s preparation for learning literacy skills.
