The Design Challenge has a structure as follows:

Just prior to The Design Challenge, handbooks will be issued giving background information on the roles, team assignments, rules and expectations. Pre-tournament questions (survey) focus on identifying participant views and knowledge in water/energy applications so we can 1) identify appropriate team placement and 2) assess any shift in these positions

Day 1 – What is it all about? Introduction to the tournament and its structure, issues and expectations. Some networking and short group activities to familiarise with the topics and each other. Key principles presented and group discussions. Theory and practical information on relevant key disciplines. Group and small group discussions.

Day 2 – Background Lectures and interactive activities on key topics (regional or catchment scale). What are the problems? What solutions are being proposed? How have past options performed? Unbiased look at what policy and technical options are being or have been considered?

Site visit and industry partner discussions to understand real world challenges of water and energy in cities.? (possibly on Day 3)

Day 3 – Design. Lectures on urban design/planning, water sensitive urban design etc (district scale) Tournament process starts. Teams develop and present an overarching management goal,

review and tools available to quantify choices, and develop and evaluate options, and work to prepare decision aids using provided templates.

Day 4 – Regional and Urban strategies Scenario 1 unfolds in the form of a scientific briefing (e.g. Council Policy regarding blue green infrastructure, transport etc). This is expected as a water scenario with high relevance to climate change, future uncertainties and related implications for water resources management. Teams collaboratively prepare, evaluate, and present their strategy. This strategy is evaluated (scored) by all additional participants including industry expert partners to generate (a) players and (b) judges, scores.
