A participatory work by Caitlin Dear with Thomas Schmocker

Have you ever hung out with a tree? Read them a poem… Posed them a question… Made them a promise…?

In this live work, human individuals are invited into a practice of being in company with trees; exploring interspecies communication, sensitivity and sociality. Though approached by one human individual, this becomes social through an agenda of reciprocity and exchange between human and tree.

A work by Caitlin Dear (choreographer) in collaboration with Thomas Schmocker (sound designer), Tree Time is centred around sharing this interspecies practice that has long been a part of Caitlin’s everyday life. It requires thinking beyond the human perspective and stepping beyond one’s own socio-cultural frameworks to interrogate new, personal relations with our vegetal friends. Actively researching and renegotiating socio-ecological relationships/paradigms.

Meeting participants inside IAC, Caitlin will introduce this underlying practice of ‘Tree Time’ and relevant practicalities on a one-on-one basis. Each participant will be provided a headset and individually taken on a walk, to meet a tree with whom they will be left in company with.

Audio instructions from the headset will offer various pathways into the work. The audio offers questions to ponder as well as provocations that call for action through physical, sensorial or speculative investigation. Embedded in a sonic environment with an inquisitive atmosphere, these spoken words guide participants towards a social encounter with a tree.

Audiences of all ages are welcome, if children will be attending please contact: caitlin.l.dear@gmail.com
