SANDY EVANS TRIO WITH BOBBY SINGH FEATURING BRETT HIRST AND TOBY HALL + TONY GORMAN & BOBBY SINGH

An uplifting Indian-jazz intercultural project showcasing some of Australia’s leading jazz and Indian musicians. Featuring soulful, melodic improvisations and stunning tabla and drum exchanges, this is music to lift the spirit and nourish the soul.

This group is led by Sandy Evans whose collaboration, Bridge of Dreams, was a highlight of the 2019 Sydney Festival.

Sandy Evans is widely recognised for her outstanding abilities as a musician and composer. Sandy was awarded an OAM in 2010, an Australia Council Fellowship in 2017, the Inaugural Bell Award for Australian Jazz Musician of The Year, and many APRA, ARIA and Mo Awards. Sandy has performed in Australia, India and Europe with many jazz and Indian musicians who share an interest in developing a meaningful fusion of Indian and Western ideas. Sandy’s collaboration with Shubha Mudgal, Aneesh Pradhan and Sirens Big Band, Bridge of Dreams, was released on Rufus Records to critical acclaim in 2018. Sandy is a lecturer in Music at UNSW.

Brett Hirst is one of Australia’s most in demand bass players and with has performed and recorded with such outstanding Australian and international artists as Mike Nock, Mark Isaacs, Lior, Katie Noonan, James Morrison and Vince Jones.

Toby Hall is one of the most highly regarded Australian jazz drummers. He has played on more that 20 CDs and performed with virtually every major Australian jazz artist, as well as many top international artists. He has toured extensively throughout Australian and performed at many jazz festivals and contemporary music venues throughout Europe, USA, Canada, Asia, and the South Pacific. A band-leader in his own right he plays with a number of the best Australasian bands including The Umbrellas, Sandy Evans Trio, Roger Manins.

TONY GORMAN & BOBBY SINGH

Virtuoso musicians Tony Gorman and Bobby Singh will be making a rare appearance in Sydney at this special concert.

In 1997, Tony Gorman’s life changed dramatically when he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. A three time ARIA Award winner, Gorman who previously featured with bands such as Clarion Fracture Zone, MARA! and the Australian Art Orchestra, was suddenly challenged by the most basic motor skills. In a courageous journey back to musical expression he discovered a new ‘voice’ and direction.

In collaboration with Bobby Singh he has created a stunning vehicle that transcends genre and the physical limitation of MS to provide a feast of improvised sound and rhythm. Scottish born Gorman’s 40 year professional career as a musician, composer and producer has made him one of the most respected artists in Australia.

Tabla player Bobby Singh spent much of his childhood studying the northern Indian percussive instrument in Mumbai from the great maestros. He is an internationally renowned virtuoso both in traditional Indian classical music and cross cultural genres. Singh has performed at numerous mainstream arts festivals across Australia and has collaborated with the finest musicians including Slava Grigoriyan, Greg Sheehan, Ben Walsh, David Hirschfelder and Sandy Evans to name a few. . “Bobby Singh is such an extraordinary tabla player, beyond belief……..Stunning.” (Newell, the program.net.au, 16 March 2005).

They create new work together which combines Gorman’s jazz, folk and Western classical roots with Singh’s Hindustani Classical background.
