Emotions are an essential part of being human. Some argue that they are a trait or attribute that make us as human as possible. These are extremely powerful energy bundles that can be locked up in your brain controlled by various factors, from external stimuli to natural hormones within the human body. They can be used to motivate people and provide energy that allows them to do their regular tasks with greater enthusiasm.
The human mind finds the workplace environment challenging. It's high-stress by its very nature. There is constant social interaction and heavy crunch times from overbearing deadlines. Also, there are constant and taxing labor. Some professionals may be forced to work in high-stress environments. Emotions can run high and this can put a strain on the mind. These are not bad things in and of themselves, but wear and tear to the workplace can cause problems when there is a fault or a slight. Your emotions suddenly take control and you end up saying things that you regret later.
Paramount Training and Development understands that these are consequences of regular work environments. While no solution is perfect, there are ways to address the issue. We have developed an Emotional Awareness Training Module to assist participants in understanding and expressing emotions.
Emotions can be anything , from joy to dismay to anger to worry. These emotions are not inherently bad or good. They can only be made positive by the actions of those who are currently experiencing them. Certain ways to express these emotions are acceptable in most social settings including the workplace. They can also be turned into something positive or negative. Neglecting to control or express these emotions properly can lead to negative consequences in the workplace and in social settings. Paramount Training and Development created this Emotion Awareness Training module in order to assist participants in understanding emotion and how to control it. It also teaches them how to recognize emotions in others and how they can affect their lives.
Emotional Awareness Training Outline
Gain insights into emotion
Emotion is a term that covers several feelings and can be influenced by many factors. It’s a difficult thing to outright define, let alone understand, as it encompasses many concepts under different fields of study with their own small and large intricacies that would take a lengthy period of time to study in their entirety. Emotional Awareness training is not that, but it will teach participants the core fundamentals of emotion and have a satisfactory and serviceable grasp on its concepts via tried and proven methods and/or experimental procedures derived from intensive research and study in the relevant fields.
Gain emotional self-awareness and self-control
While emotions are by nature are difficult to control, in most social settings – including the workplace – a degree of control needs to be practiced and perfected to avoid performing actions that can stifle, stall, or otherwise disrupt the workplace and its operation, and at the same time find a healthy outlet to release these emotions in a health and acceptable fashion in or out of the workplace. Emotional Awareness training offers participants the opportunity to experiment with and utilize strategies for high stress environments which will allow them to maintain their composure despite of these external factors, while also giving them the lessons and methods they need to properly express these withheld emotions and avoid unpleasant interactions to happen in the workplace and beyond.
Empathise with and see emotions in others
While it may be difficult to understand one’s own emotions, it may be slightly easier to see emotions in others. As anything from body language, tone of voice, posture, mannerisms, even eye contact, can be clear indicators of someone in emotional duress. The Emotional Awareness Training module was designed not only for participants seeking help for themselves but also for others; especially as are participants are expected to return to the working environment once the sessions are over. As such offers coursework and lessons on recognising indicators of emotional duress in others and contingency plans for when they need to confront and negotiate with these individuals.
Learn emotional etiquette in the workplace and other social situations
The workplace – just like any other social environment – has its own set of unwritten rules and laws that anyone and everyone working within its boundaries needs to abide by and conform to be socially acceptable. While some may find this odd unwritten social contract simple to work around, this is not necessarily universal. That’s why in Emotional Awareness Training our highly trained and qualified staff come in to teach participants about these obfuscated rules in the workplace and methods and strategies to keep themselves and their emotions under control even in a high-stress environment.
Undertake behaviour, decision-making, and consequence training
There are reasons why decisions made in states of emotional duress are frowned upon, and why certain behaviours are discouraged within the context of the workplace or even in social settings in general. Some individuals are informed of and well aware of these quirks and situations, while others are not as informed and may fault and commit social faux pas. Emotions are incredibly potent and can overtake one’s rational and thinking mind for long enough to perform an act or make a decision that will only have dire consequences in future, no matter how long it may actually take. To that end, part of Emotional Awareness training is centred on the analysis of certain behaviours and their effect on social settings. This, as well as give examples to participants about how emotion can play a powerful role in decision making, and how emotional duress can adversely affect one’s ability to make decisions, and what such emotionally charged choices can do in the long term.
