This year's special Crimewords guest is Shelley Burr, author of Wake and Ripper! Shelley chats with Margaret Hickey about crime writing and their new books!

Shelley Burr grew up on Newcastle's beaches and her grandparents' property in Glenrowan, and on the road between the two. When not writing, Shelley is working to establish a small permaculture farm and is studying sustainable agriculture at the University of New England. WAKE was a Top Five bestseller, won the CWA Debut Dagger Award in 2019, ABIA's 2023 Matt Richell Award for New Writer of the Year and the 2023 Ned Kelly Award for best debut crime fiction. WAKE was also shortlisted for the Indie Book Awards Debut Novel Award. Her second novel Ripper came out in 2023 and she is currently working on a third.

Well known local writer, Margaret Hickey is an award-winning author and playwright from Beechworth Victoria. She has a PhD in Creative Writing and is deeply interested in rural lives and communities. Her plays, including What We Said and Bloke, have been performed all over Australia and she is the author of Rural Dreams, a collection of short stories. Her best selling crime trilogy includes Cutters End, Stone Town, and Broken Bay. Her new book, The Creeper, is about to be released.
