Children bereaved by domestic violence: understanding circumstances and improving care
Presentation by Associate Professor Eva Alisic
2.00-3.00pm Tuesday the 27th August 2019
Level 7 C Auditorium, Queensland Children’s Hospital
Parental intimate partner homicide has a major impact on children, family members and their broader environment. It requires professionals to take decisions that have far-reaching consequences, such as regarding living arrangements and contact with the perpetrator. Little is known about children’s and carers’ own perspectives in this regard. This presentation homes in on the available literature as well as case file data and in-depth interviews with young people and caregivers. It considers international and national data, and explores the experiences of placement, custody and guardianship, contact between family members from the victim and the perpetrator side, contact between children and the perpetrator-parent, and the services received from relevant agencies.
