Kristin Berardi and Sam Anning are both highly regarded composers, performers and improvisers. Don’t miss this special evening of music featuring the intimate pairing of just their two instruments – double bass and voice.

Between the two musicians they have won multiple international and national awards but it’s upon hearing them collaborate that you get a sense of their depth of expression, groove and presence. They recently returned from NYC where they recorded a band album, and played at the famous jazz club Birdland. This will be the first concert in their national tour for their debut album as a duo, and is guaranteed to be a special evening.

Berardi is one of the first calls in the Australian Jazz Scene. She has worked with such international greats such as Kenny Werner, Jim Pugh, Ingrid Jensen, Christine Jensen, Pascal Schumacher, Dan Weiss, Thomas Morgan, Gary Versace and such Australian Jazz greats as Julien Wilson, Sam Anning, Barney McAll, James Muller, Jamie Oehlers, Ben Vanderwal, Tony Gould amoungst others. She has also worked with Wendy Matthews, Katie Noonan, Deborah Conway, Claire Bowditch, Kate Miller-Heidke, Ella Hooper and Emma Dean throughout Australia.

She won the Montreux Jazz Festival's International Shure Voice competition in 2006 and the following year supported Al Jarreau and George Benson at the Montreux Jazz Festival. She won the National Jazz Awards for Voice 2012 at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival and has three Bell Awards for the Best Jazz Vocal Album of the year. Also, in 2010 she was awarded the Freedman Fellowship for Jazz in Australia, and is the only vocalist to ever win this prestigious award. Since 2013, Berardi has been on casual staff at the Brisbane Conservatorium of Music, and WAAPA from 2017. She also guest lectures around universities in Australia and New Zealand, and continues to tour and record albums. She has released eleven albums to date. 2019 will see Berardi tour in the USA and Europe and throughout Australia in jazz clubs and festivals.

Originally from Fremantle WA, Sam Anning has become an internationally sought after bassist. Whilst undertaking the Bachelor of Jazz (Performance) degree at WAAPA, Sam became an indispensable fixture on the Western Australian jazz scene, eventually releasing his debut album as a band leader ‘Sam Anning Quintet: Re-Turning Point’ (listenhearcollective) featuring Graeme Lyall AM and cello quartet WOOD.

Sam soon relocated to Melbourne where he also became intensely involved in the jazz scene, performing and recording with Australian jazz greats such as Allan Browne, Joe Chindamo, Aaron Choulai, Paul Grabowsky, and Jamie Oehlers. He also formed his second group, the ‘Sam Anning Quartet’ featuring Eugene Ball, Andrea Keller, and, Rajiv Jayaweera.

After successfully auditioning and receiving a scholarship to undertake the Masters of Music program at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music, Sam soon relocated to New York City. There he became highly sought after among some of the greatest bass players in the world. He went on to tour nationally and internationally extensively, including prestigious international jazz festivals such as Montreal, Vancouver, Detroit, Jazz a Vienne, Copenhagen, Port au Prince, and Panama. He would also return to Australia to perform at the Perth and Melbourne international jazz festivals.

He has performed with many international jazz greats including Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner, Ari Hoenig, George Garzone, Gilad Hekselman, Greg Osby, and Charlie Haden.

His accolades include the Toyota Scholarship for Jazz (2001), finalist in the James Morrison Scholarship twice, finalist in the 2006 Freedman Fellowship, finalist in the 2007 Melbourne Prize for Music, 3rd place in the 2008 National Jazz Awards, 2008 Bell Award for Young Jazz Musician of the Year, 2009 ARIA Award nomination for ‘Best Jazz Album’, the 2010 Bell Award for Classic Jazz Album of the Year (‘Homage’- Anning, Hannaford, Browne-Jazzhead) and winner of the 2015 National Jazz Award.
