The process of allocating appointments and managing urgent and routine patients presents a degree of risk to general practice. Staff (especially those new to general practice) can find it challenging to determine the high-risk patient, to determine what action to take and when to consult with other members of the practice team.

This workshop is designed for all Practice Staff, including GPs, to assist them to gain the knowledge and confidence they need to safely undertake the prioritisation and triage roles, which are a growing part of the everyday process of managing patient demand.

In this session, you will review the current 5th Edition RACGP general practice standards in relation to reception and nursing responsibilities in managing requests for care. This will include:

  • What the new requirements for accreditation, including training in triage and a system are for establishing and managing urgency.
  • Understand how to identify and manage higher-risk patients in general practice.
  • Be aware of the medico-legal issues in relation to allocation of appointments.
  • Develop prioritisation/triage skills to safely manage requests for care by phone or presentation to the practice.
  • Have an understanding of the range of prioritisation/triage tools available for general practice and their use.
