Concert & Book Launch

Local legends, Greek-Australian songbird Parissa Bouas and Flemish born songwriter Carl Cleves, formerly The Hottentots, stretch musical boundaries with sublime vocals and ‘amazing songs’ that have riveted audiences from Berlin to Brazil.

Their genre busting repertoire could be classified as folk, jazz, blues or world music, but in truth is a seductive blend of all. Classic folk melodies combine with exceptional lyrics and an international flavour that merges Parissa’s ‘sweet, rich and soaring’ vocals and polished percussion, with Carl’s warm rustic baritone and unique guitar style.

If you came to Byron in the 90’s, you would have seen the Hottentot Party play. Since then they have been touring the world, performing in theatres & festivals, recording 6 albums together and numerous solo projects, winning many awards, receiving widespread international acclaim and Carl has also been writing books!

Carl’s 3rd book in his Tarab trilogy, ‘Soundtracks of My Life’, takes you on an intimate global journey in his search for the elusive feeling of Tarab, the Arabic notion of musical and poetic ecstasy.

The night will start with the ‘Soundtracks of my Life’ book launch and new song showcase for Carl. The second half of the evening will showcase Parissa’s songs and then a set of Carl & Parissa favourites, featuring Elliot Orr on percussion & Dan Brown on keys, with some special guests.

Intimate, meaningful, political, playful, personal, poetic & powerful, Australia’s definitive coffeehouse couple weave stories with songs, touching a deep vein of humanity that leaves audiences moved and uplifted.

“ **** genuinely genre-busting… amazing songs…This is one album worth owning…” Bruce Elder, SMH

‘I thought I was into world music but I’m just floating on a rubber mattress in the shallows. What an overflowing cornucopia of stories and unheard-of musical styles you have produced. Absolutely awe-inspiring … Like the previous two books, ‘Soundtracks of my Life’ deserves heaps of attention and appreciation’ Param Berg

‘Cleves is a rarity. He is a true traveller in an age of holidaymakers and gawpers.’ Bruce Elder
