MUSIC ON THE HILL invites you to a night of globetrotting flair as their new music series takes flight just in time for Christmas!
You'll hear local & visiting musicians in this World Music / Global Jazz 'tour de force' collaboration on December 10, 2022.
GLOBAL JAZZ COLLECTIVE is Maryanne Piper (New England North West Region, Clarinets, "a fantasy-filled world of sound" SDZ Germany), Damian Wright (Hunter Region, Flamenco Guitar, "a brilliant flamenco guitarist...a captivating solo player, his articulation of complex lines dripping with conviction" Sydney Morning Herald Australia), Gai Bryant (Sydney Metro, Saxophones, "one of the brightest lights in the local jazz scene" Financial Review), Ed Goyer (Sydney Metro, Piano & Vibraphone, "unique and rewarding music that demands your time" Words About Music), plus Harry Birch (Wollongong Region, Double Bass, "a young creative visionary" Earshift).
This evening of fine music variety will take you on travels across the globe, from Damian Wright's beautiful solo Flamenco guitar sounds to Gai Bryant's sizzling Ibero-Latino Trio. An irresistible alchemy of Peruvian, Brazilian, Cuban, and Andalusian rhythmic flair, Gai's trio transports the audience to South America's vibrancy & rhythmic intricacy. Maryanne Piper leads ATLAS, a trio exploring Flamenco music’s roots. Their musical travels take audiences from North Africa via Middle-Eastern roads to Jewish Klezmer heartland, exploring gypsy flavours & Balkan routes along the way. Northern European traditions infused with light & texture, along with South American passion add to the truly international palette of this dynamic contemporary group.
These two stunning trios join in collaboration, bringing you the music of travels afar, ancestry, migration & languages transcended, along with an underlying spirit of tenacious humanity. You’ll hear music by both trios before they unite in a global fusion of musical storytelling crossing continents both near & far.
As a special treat, JUNO finally takes the stage in an intercultural explosion, combining professional & community musicians in an exchange of cultural dialogue. North West residents from across the globe, who now call the region home, share their culture, homeland & music in a melting pot of sounds that reflect the New England North West region of today. Music by the North West for the North West. We can't wait to hear their first offerings!
Come along for some merriment & cheer, brighten your spirits, mingle with new people over tea & coffee, expand your horizons & get ready for a year of MUSIC ON THE HILL.
