We will be gathering on the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri People, the custodians of these lands for generations.

Would you like to explore the way you express your creative imagination… to play and create a multi-dimensional expression of yourself? Join interdisciplinary artist Gav Barbey on a journey of self-discovery via art play, nature, movement & sound.

An immersive and participatory exploration of the body, through the use of guided somatic meditation and movement, nature play and sensory play, observational drawing of the continual line, somatic mark making and mask making.

How do we see past the 2-dimensional image we see within the mirror, our still life?

How can we observe what we are drawn to and how we each have a unique way of observing and creating through tactile mediums, through movement and our connection to nature and the other.

What to expect:

The day will start with a guided somatic meditation and movement practice, designed to inspire you to go within the body, to explore the shapes, textures, tones. The invitation is to tune in to your imagination and tap out of the pre-conceived ideas of ourselves.

  • We will use observational continuous line drawing to express the dimensional forms onto a paper, building an awareness of our own unique understanding of how we see, feel and express within our unique perspective. (I promise you a laugh and an aha moment)
  • The invitation to observe nature, to feel into what it is we are drawn to. By collecting treasures within and of nature, the invitation is to create a new sculptural expression of ourselves. These works are ephemeral… “nothing is inherently static, everything is within movement, everything is within transformation…”
  • Throughout the day and our last activity will be finding the rhythms within us through music and sound, the invitation is to group mark make (Mark Making is a term used for the creation of different patterns, lines, textures and tones without the need for written words or pictorial symbols)

Gav encourages us to see past the words that often narrow our senses, letting go of the idea ‘ART’ so as we can tap into our unique self-expression, our own craft.

“For me the still life, the mirror and selfies are abstractions… nothing is flat, and nothing is still…”

The workshop is for everyone, there is no prior experience needed, all you need to bring is a sense of the curious and a sense of play. Lunch will be provided, Gav will invite us to collectively create and eat together, inspiring us to see that every action has an imaginative and creative nature to it.

What to bring:

  • Yoga mat / cushion / bolster
  • Water bottle
  • Cloths that you don’t mind getting dirty
