Debaser presents ‘Khandaan (Descent)’ – an evening of art, film and music. Inspired by the Urdu term ‘Khandaan’, which translates to those who descend from one common ancestor, ‘Khandaan (Descent)’ is a cross-cultural exhibition ruminating upon themes of cultural and ancestral lineage in an Australian landscape. Artists will delve into their own personal experiences of identity and diaspora, presenting works across several mediums that explore and reclaim their multifaceted connection to their roots. 

At the heart of the evening is a screening of ‘Khandaan’, a short-documentary directed by Pakistani-Australian filmmaker Aleena Rizvi. Delving into the Khan family, whose roots trace back to the 1880s during the era of Afghan cameleers, the film offers a close and personal exploration of their journey spanning six generations in Australia. 

The night's soundtrack will be woven by performances from a lineup of exceptionally talented Eora-based female musicians: Sentii, Yasmina Sadiki, and Jade Kenji.
