Jazz After Sunset - featuring The Primetime Sextet
The Jazz Sessions presents Jazz After Sunset – an unforgettable evening celebrating the diversity, energy, and artistry that have become hallmarks of the series.
The concert will open with the Glasshouse Country Christian College Jazz Band, whose energetic big band performance will showcase the remarkable talent and enthusiasm of the next generation of jazz musicians.
Headlining the evening is Brisbane's Primetime Sextet, a hard bop ensemble led by saxophonist and composer Ashley Hutton, who recently returned from a three-month residency in New York City studying at the renowned Tribeca Jazz Institute.
Formed from a shared passion for the iconic jazz sextets of the 1960s, the ensemble draws inspiration from Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers and many of the legendary musicians who emerged from that influential group, including Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson, Cedar Walton, Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, and Vincent Herring.
The Primetime Sextet features Ashley Hutton (tenor saxophone), Gabriel Garcia (trumpet), Brodie McAllister (trombone), Joe Machen (piano), Connor Perkins (bass), and Oscar Langton (drums).
Originally formed through late-night sessions at Brisbane's Alligator Club in late 2025, the group has quickly developed a reputation for energetic performances that honour the hard bop tradition while bringing a fresh contemporary perspective. Earlier this year, the ensemble recorded its debut album, Live at the Alligator Club, for the 4000 Records Jazz in Meanjin label, with a national tour planned later in 2026.
Hutton's recent studies in New York City were supported by the Brisbane Lord Mayor's Creative Fellowship, where he worked with internationally respected jazz educators and performers including Bob Mover, Chris Byars, and Grant Stewart.
"Jazz After Sunset reflects exactly what The Jazz Sessions aims to present: outstanding artistry, diverse musical voices, and opportunities to experience both emerging and established performers in an intimate live setting."
Audiences can expect an evening rich in musical expression, featuring everything from vibrant big band sounds to the driving rhythms, sophisticated improvisation, and timeless appeal of hard bop jazz.
The BWMCA Events team will be managing the bar for the evening as a fundraising effort. A selection of alcohol, soft drinks, and snacks will be offered. Cash/Eftpos are accepted.
