Our emotions influence how we interact with others and are part of our humanity. Happiness and anger can provide the energy needed to do certain tasks. However, sadness and depression can reduce energy and decrease one's ability to work. One's environment and self can have a significant impact on one's performance.

This is the challenge that the workplace presents. Although not designed to be oppressive or soul-crushing, the workplace can be a hotbox for negativity. It can also house many things that can reduce morale and worsen mental and emotional health. Stress at work, uncooperative and/or incooperative superiors, toxic environments, and offending clients. These and many other factors can impact the workplace environment, causing stress and even reducing employee productivity. It can also have serious consequences for their mental health, ranging from anxiety and depression to suicide .

It is easy to blame the workplace, the environment, and even your peers for all this. However, the role of the workplace is too vital to be ignored, especially in today's modern world. Although paid vacations and other perks can help reduce workplace stress, they are more like a bandage for a wound. Any solution that is possible or necessary must be long-lasting and help workers adapt to workplace changes. Paramount Training and Development spent a lot of time trying to find such a solution. The result of Paramount's Workplace Negativity Training program is that solution.

All of us know that the workplace, despite its many pitfalls, its sometimes cruel disregard for individuals and their health, is a foundation of modern society. It is where many of the things we use are made, produced or distributed. To ensure that the machine and those who use it work at their best, there are certain steps you need to take. Certain individuals have the skills and knowledge to spot and reduce negativity, how to deal with people who are down, and how to help them before they harm themselves. They also need to promote the behavior and attitudes that make work a more positive environment. Paramount Training and Development can teach you these lessons and many more.

Workplace Negativity Training Outline

Identify sources of workplace negativity

The workplace is composed of many components, from location, to objects found within, to the people, clients, and a whole smorgasbord of entities present within them. All of these things can be seen as projecting a certain aura around them that influences the mood of coworkers, or at the very least are usually associated with some or other value that makes interacting with them a point of personal and emotional contention. People in particular can run the gamut from sources of strong positive reinforcement to soul-crushing and oppressive individuals that by means of power dynamics or poor wording of statements made to others, can just drag themselves and their peers down. To start Workplace Negativity Trainees off, they’re set to learn how certain social interactions within the workplace can cause stress, how improper handling can negatively affect one’s mood, and how certain objects can be negatively linked to bad interactions had in their presence.

Work around emotional hazards within the environment

Workspaces are usually made into confined boxes found within drab places in the middle of concrete jungles. Getting to these places as well is a challenge, and in particularly congested environments such as large cities found in the middle of population centres it can cause stress and negatively affect an employee’s emotions long before they even start working. Psychology plays a lot into Workplace Negativity Training, and with that in mind it takes into account how the environment where the workplace itself is situated in can negatively affect a person’s mental and emotional health. There are ways and strategies to help mitigate these adverse effects and they range from the micro-perspective (which is to say, the workers themselves) just as well as the macro perspective (changing elements of the environment to improve people’s mood), all of which will be learned and can hence be implemented by our peers.

Be capable of working with difficult people

One of the greater challenges that learners of Workplace Negativity Training must face are what are termed as difficult people. These individuals vary wildly, from the uninitiated and ill-informed though non-malevolent, to those who are intentionally violating the socially acceptable for whatever malevolent purpose they may have. There are many ways to deal with these problem individuals as will be taught to our learners, but equally important is the ability of our learners to identify the intent of these violators; for while there may be methods to deal with these troublemakers in a neutral manner, other methods require much more severe measures that should only be carried out if dully warranted. Learners hence are also given methods and strategies to reliably identify the intent of these individuals and then deal with them in the most appropriate manner possible.

Identify individuals suffering from office negativity

Workplace negativity can affect different people in wildly different ways. Some are very pronounced such as displaying sharp dips in overall productivity or heightened hostility and agitation when interacting with others, while others are less obvious such as occasional outbursts, propensity for self-deprecation, and so on. The intensity of how they manifest their emotional trouble matters little however, as both can be terribly suffering from similar cases of mental and emotional degradation; at best it means their performance takes a hit, at worst they’re at risk of bringing harm to themselves and the workplace at large. Workplace Negativity Training not only sees these people as sources of negativity but also as people at risk. Hence why learners are taught how to spot them through whatever manifestations they display, reach out to them using methods employed by experts in the field of psychology, and how to set them off on the proper course of treatment.

Promote healthy practices for mental health

Meditation is used traditionally by monastic monks as part of their daily routines and rituals, but studies have shown that the act of meditation has many useful applications and can be used to promote a healthier mind. Proper rest, relaxation, and decompression are also extremely beneficial to the human brain as it allows the brain to recover, repair, and otherwise mend itself after strenuous, daily exertion. This act can also encourage improvements at home or at work such as better retention and more automated connections. As most people may undervalue, disregard, or otherwise, underestimate the value that these simple acts can be for their overall mental health, learners taking this course will be properly informed of the many benefits of proper mental health as well as strategies and methodologies that can assist them in their own personal mental health and how these simple acts can improve their overall mental health and hence their performance on the field.
