“Music is always a commentary on society”. (Frank Zappa)
Manos Loizos was one of Greece’s foremost composers of the 20th century and his songs depict the social and political crisis in Greece during the 1960’s and 70’s. Many of his songs became anthems to a generation because they captured the struggle of the average citizen against the tyranny of social injustice and inequality. Loizos’ music was, and still is accessible to a wide audience. Despite the powerful narrative, there is a beauty and simplicity to the songs making them easy to remember and sing along to.
This performance by George Doukas and the D Strings is part of a series of shows across Australia paying tribute to the music of Manos Loizos, with a repertoire of powerful and recognisable pieces. The musical arrangements, by George Doukas, will be performed by the D Strings, a ten piece ensemble, with a mix of Greek and classically trained musicians. The introduction of special guests Keyna Wilkins (piano and Flute) and James Castrissos (drums) adds another layer to the unique sound of the D Strings.
