From one sophisticated giant to another, Anthony Scott & His Quartet pays tribute to the soulful sound, original compositions, and timeless jazz standard takes of Dexter Gordon.
Dexter Gordon was a tenor saxophonist, who was considered amongst the first tenors to speak the language of Charlie Parker. He stood at a commanding 6’6’’ which granted him the titles of “Long Tall Dexter” and the “Sophisticated Giant.”
Throughout his career, Dexter featured with many jazz legends including Lionel Hampton, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Nat King Cole, Fletcher Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Barry Harris, Sonny Clark, Oscar Peterson, Paul Chambers and Herbie Hancock. His early bebop playing went on to influence John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. In turn, Rollins and Coltrane influenced him when he explored the genres of hard bop and modal jazz.
After experiencing personal troubles in the 1950’s, the 1960’s saw a renaissance where Gordon reached the peak of his powers. During a short stay in New York, he signed with Blue Note Records in 1961 and recorded four albums over two years, including he’s most revered album “Go!”, before moving to Europe. Dexter would go on to reside between Paris and Copenhagen for 14 years before returning to the states for good in 1976.
Amongst frequent recordings and concert appearances, Dexter starred in the movie “Round Midnight” in 1986 which earned him a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actor. He portrayed fictional character “Dale Turner,” an expatriate jazz musician in Paris during the late 1950s based loosely on Lester Young and Bud Powell. 4 years later he passed away on April 25, 1990.
On August 14, Anthony Scott & His Quartet will bring Dexter Gordon’s brilliance and works to life at Camelot Lounge’s Django Bar. This is not an event to miss for all lovers of Jazz and music!
