In support of Mummy's Wish and The Queensland Brain Institute, UQ
Mummy’s Wish Ambassador, Carla Haddan of Place, has a history of creating unforgettable events that provide much needed funds to help women touched by cancer.
This is something Carla knows all too well…
In 2005 she lost her 31-year-old best friend and mum of three young children, Helen Hackett, to breast cancer. To celebrate Helen's life, Carla and her friends established the Helen Hackett Foundation and raised an incredible $525,000 to purchase two digital mammography units for Brisbane’s Wesley hospital.
In July of 2013,Carla was diagnosed with advanced Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and spent the next 12 months fighting for her life undergoing gruelling chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment, whilst also caring for her 5-year-old son.
Mummy’s Wish was there for Carla and her family, and she vowed that when she was well again, she would help Mummy’s Wish support other families in their time of need.
CEO of White Label Noba Tracey Watkins understands the heartache of caring for a loved one with dementia. Tracey’s mother, Vonnie Healy, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia.
The hallmark of Alzheimer's disease is memory loss, which results from early degeneration and death of neurons in the hippocampus, a brain structure involved in memory formation. People with Alzheimer’s can also be disoriented and confused their symptoms can progress to include motor difficulties and challenges with executive planning and decision making.
When her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Tracey dedicated her time to caring for her, and felt the full impact of the disease on her family and those that loved her mother. Tracey vowed to find a way to make a difference for other families impacted by dementia. By helping to fund a PhD student each year at the UQ Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), Tracey supports much-needed research in this field and continues to honour her mother, Vonnie.
