This workshop is created with the intention for us to gather together and work as a team to co-create a beautiful mandala using rakes and a geometrical design, enjoy the afternoon of moving meditation and art creation in the natural elements.
In the first part of the workshop I will introduce you to the rake and how you can use it to create art in the sand. I'll also talk through a brief history of mandalas and what they can symbolise. We will then each have a practice in small groups to get familiar with how the rake in the sand.
I will then begin by sharing the design brief and inviting small groups at a time to help bring the artwork to life (you will have my guidance here). The second part of this workshop is to collectively fill paper bags with sand, this is quite a meditative practice. We then place the bags on the mandala, place and light a candle within each one.
We will complete the event by gathering in a sounding meditation in circle outside the mandala as the candles flicker at sunset. This is an opportunity to set a personal intention before you depart the group or simply enjoy the beauty that you have collectively created. We will be guided by a special guest for this segment of the workshop.
Just like the sand mandalas created by Buddhist Monks in Tibet, the artwork will be washed away by time.
I will remove the bags and candles so you are then free to leave and perhaps enjoy a meal nearby.
