Discover the World of Native Bees: Diversity, Beekeeping & Hands‑On Learning

In this immersive three‑hour workshop, Tobias Smith—native bee researcher, educator, and commercial native beekeeper—offers an immersive introduction to Australia’s extraordinary native bees. We will take a deep dive into native bee diversity, expanding on Toby's engaging presentation at the CHRL AGM last year.

The session begins with an exploration of the secret lives of solitary species—blue‑banded bees, cuckoo bees, leafcutter bees, and many more.

The focus then shifts to Australia’s honey‑producing native stingless bees, including how they can be kept successfully in hive boxes. A hands‑on demonstration offers a rare opportunity to observe the opening of a live stingless bee hive, look inside the colony, and even taste the honey.

The workshop also delves into broader topics such as native bee conservation, creating effective bee hotels, and practical ways to support native bees in home gardens or back at your Landcare site.
