Oncofertility Consortium

Improvements in cancer diagnosis and treatment of children, adolescents and adult cancer patients have led to significant improvements in cancer survival. A patient’s fertility (ability to have a child) can be affected by both a cancer diagnosis and the treatment received. The loss of the opportunity to have a child after cancer, is one of the most distressing outcomes of successful cancer treatment that can lead to immense psychological distress in a patient.

The FUTuRE Fertility research team are undertaking a number of studies that will improve opportunities for childhood, adolescent and adult cancer survivors to be able to have a family in the future.

The FUTuRE Fertility research group have also developed the world’s first Australasian Oncofertility Registry. There are currently 170 cancer and fertility centres from around Australia and New Zealand participating on the Registry. Outcomes from the Registry will be able to inform clinicians about a patient’s potential risks for fertility (their ability to have children in the future) based on the patient’s age at diagnosis, cancer treatment and gender.

The money raised at the fundraiser will be donated to the FUTuRE Fertility study.
