Dr Shine Choi’s National Library Fellowship - Understanding North Korea’s Third World Diplomacy through Culture and Art - examines North Korea’s connections with and visions of the global world. Her project focuses on North Korea’s relations with the Third World, that is, the anti-colonial, anti-imperial bloc that gained global visibility through the 1955 Bandung Conference and the establishment of the Non-Aligned Movement in 1961 and Tricontinental in 1966. Shine is most interested in examining how diplomatic relations are forged in and through subjective texts and visuals.

Shine Choi teaches Political Theory and International Relations in Aotearoa New Zealand. Her research has focused on how an illiberal state like North Korea creates the international as a space of politics. She co-edits the book series, Creative Interventions in Global Politics with Rowman and Littlefield, and serves as an Editor for International Feminist Journal of Politics (2022-2025).
