For nearly five decades, The Caxton Street Jazz Band has been bringing the spirit of classic hot jazz to life with energy, precision and unmistakable style. Founded in 1977 in Brisbane and named after their original home in Caxton Street’s Baroona Hall, the band has grown to become one of Australia’s most respected and enduring exponents of traditional jazz.

Renowned for their crisp arrangements, tight ensemble playing and vibrant stage presence, this six-piece outfit delivers an irresistible blend of trad/New Orleans revival, mainstream, swing and blues drawn from the golden era of jazz — the 1920s through to the 1950s. While their roots lie firmly in early hot jazz, their repertoire also embraces big band swing, rhythm and blues, folk, country and popular classics, all infused with the band’s fresh, contemporary edge.

The Caxton Street Jazz Band rose to prominence during the 1980s with their long-running appearances at the famed “Jazz ‘N Jug” sessions at Brisbane’s Caxton Hotel, alongside regular performances at Australian Jazz Conventions and festivals nationwide. Today, they continue to delight audiences at jazz festivals, clubs, weddings, corporate events and community celebrations throughout Queensland and northern New South Wales.

Featuring some of Australia’s finest jazz musicians — including trumpet, trombone, clarinet, saxophone, piano, double bass, drums and washboard, complemented by engaging vocal performances — the band combines musical excellence with warmth, humour and a genuine love for the music they play.

Whether performing for dedicated jazz aficionados or introducing new listeners to the joy of traditional jazz, The Caxton Street Jazz Band consistently inspires enthusiastic crowds and standing ovations. As one delighted presenter put it:
