Social media is a global phenomenon that has been around for ten years. Its impact on society is as great as its innumerable reach. It has shattered the world, connecting once distant entities and independent entities who barely knew they existed. It has provided a platform for anyone with an idea to use simple tools such as a camera and internet connection to do whatever they wish or make whatever they want, and have the chance to reach the largest, most extensive, and the omnipresent audience has ever seen in its history.
It is not easy to use, despite its seemingly endless reach. To navigate the web that is entirely made up of machines, it takes a specialist who has a good grasp on online culture. The sheer benefits of unlimited reach, instant connection, the possibility to interact with new markets and cater to them, and the ability to create new partners are too great to ignore.
It simply needs a specialist; someone with mastery of both the media most commonly used in this field, as well as the skills and knowledge required to navigate the internet, and the tact and skill needed to ingratiate the business to the masses and manage interactions of individual-to-conglomerate in an unprecedented manner. Be proficient with the use of social media
As it is the main platform that they will use in their line of work, a certain degree of proficiency with social media will be required. Be it simply from organic presence and usage or through carefully facilitated interactions, learners will be taught key fundamentals for social media use as well as carefully constructed and well-researched theorems and methods that will allow them to become more proficient at their appointed duties.
Encourage social interaction
One of the key components of social media is its social element; it’s even in the name of the platform. As such one’s ability to mingle and interact with those present online as a representative of a larger conglomerate, company, or other form of organisation is extremely important and if done right can be a massive boost to the company as it allows people with a few good ideas to experiment on the greater public scope and drive a powerful PR game, or simply allowing them to see problems or issues or find solutions from others that people higher up in the command structure may have otherwise missed. To this end, part of Digital Media training is dedicated to teaching learners on how to improve their ability to interact socially with others and encourage them to establish rapport with whoever they are confronted by.
Have an awareness and practice online etiquette
As acting representatives for their companies or clients on a platform which scrutinizes every statement one can make with as many eyes and ears that can focus on it as there are grains of sand on a beach, the Digital Media person is as precarious as it is fruitful, especially considering that their interactions can be as personal as a representative speaking to a single individual over some grievance such as failure to provide service or similar demands, to interacting with conglomerates, smaller organisations or possibly larger than they are. Regardless, a form of etiquette must be observed for either occasion, and thanks to research and lessons made available through our coursework, learners will be able to learn what they need to properly and ethically interact with any potential clients and customers.
Have proficiencies with mixed media
Computers and the internet allow many forms of media to be used to do anything from advertisements to announcements. This makes it a flexible platform where anything can be used to convey a message. This however presents a challenge, as Digital Media persons will need to have at least some proficiencies in the creation and subsequent distribution of said media. Should the need arise, the course will give learners with deficiencies in this facet of media creation an opportunity to learn how to create a satisfactory number of media formats, and for those with prior experience to hone their pre-existing skills through workshops and other activities designed to improve and hone their skills.
Learn and practice proper media application
Along with proficiency in the production of these differing media formats also comes the necessary skill of how to effectively use these media formats for maximum impact. Learners will be taught how these formats are to be treated as tools, and similar to how actual tools are, how to use them effectively on the field; as certain formats such as text are better suited for long-form information delivery versus video or info-graphics. These lessons and more will be taught to learners with the express goal of maximsing effectiveness for all media formats.
