Spirometry

Spirometry is the optimal lung function test for diagnosing asthma and measuring lung function when assessing asthma control, however, there is no single reliable diagnostic test for asthma (National Asthma Council 2015).

This all day training with help participants better understand what spirometry is and why health professionals perform it. There is also a practical component to help you learn how to perform the test and case studies to test your skills.

Participants will:

• Improve skills to perform ‘best practice’ spirometry in the work-place
• Gain knowledge about interpretation of results
• Learn strategies for spirometry quality assurance in clinical practice.

Presenter: Mrs Barbara Karet

Barbara has spent most of her career as a Respiratory Physiologist performing lung function testing in public hospitals in Sydney. She currently works part-time at Concord Hospital, Sydney. Over the last 15 years she has been involved in Spirometry Training for medical students inside the hospital, and Practice Nurses and GPs outside the hospital, on behalf of organisations such as Asthma Australia and the National Asthma Council.
