Join local author and illustrator Tania McCartney as she launches her newest book Flora: Australia’s Most Curious Plants. This picture book celebrates the fierce, beautiful, drought-busting, fire-slaying plants that call Australia home. A companion book to Fauna: Australia’s Most Curious Creatures (2019), Flora takes kids on a botanical journey from microscopic ferns and the mighty mountain ash to breathtaking wildflowers and ravenous, carnivorous wonders and some of the deadliest plants on Earth! Kids will enjoy a book tour and signing, as well as a range of floral activities, including crafting their own paper wildflowers. There will be a lucky door prize and take-home treat bags, including Flora seed packets to grow your very own garden. This event suits children aged 5 to 10. Tickets are free but bookings essential. About Flora: Australia’s Most Curious Plants When it comes to flora, Australia is a land of diversity. From rainforests to deserts, mountains to the seashore, 90 per cent of our plant life is unique to this ancient land. Flora celebrates our curious plants—their history, quirks and uses, and how vital they are for our unique ecosystems. Flora includes spreads on the Gondwana garden, deadly flora, bush food and more. Meet the Tasmanian mountain ash, the world’s tallest flowering plant and the tallest hardwood tree, growing more than a metre each year ... for up to 400 years! Share in a park ranger’s discovery of a living Jurassic fossil deep in a secret sandstone canyon. Learn how to avoid the most painful plant on earth, the gympie gympie, whose fine little hairs inject a fiery venom that feels like acid, fire and electrocution all at once! Tania McCartney introduces readers to hard science, too, including countless cool scientific facts, information on plant classification, binomial names and scientific terms, with a handy glossary at the back of the book. |
